Makin’ Jelly…

I mentioned this on facebook a little while back…a bunch of us farm wives got together, drank coffee (see all the Starbucks cups?!), laughed (A LOT!!) and made some red pepper jelly. It was so much fun that we’ve since gotten together again and made cookies (for harvest and Christmas). Here are a few pics from the jelly making and the link for the yummy recipe!!

Have a great day!

Fall fashion trend…

I did a look of the week a while back of Angelina Jolie in a leopard print trench… and now according to all the magazines and stylists, leopard is going to be HUGE this fall. What are your thoughts? Going to go for it? Or not?!

Here are a few outfits that I’ve thrown together for fun using a fab site called Polyvore…it’s soooo fun…I get to play dress up and not spend a dime…my husband loves it!

Ranch rodeo…

A few weeks ago my husband and some friends competed in a Ranch Rodeo. This is a rodeo where the events mimic real life ranch chores…doctoring calves, loading calves in trailers, sorting them, and milking them….and so on and so forth.

Their team had a fantastic time and ended up winning third…not bad for their first time! My husband also took third in the mugging contest…which is the first picture, his job was to hold the cow still while the other cowboy milked it, took off the rope and then ran with both to the finish line.

We love our western lifestyle and raising our kids this way is a dream come true. And it looks like they love it too!

Sharing…

I want to write a book. I’ve always wanted to write a book. There is just this image of me typing madly away in a coffee shop somewhere or sitting a big leather chair in front of a fire, proofreading.

The reality of this is that I’m here frantically typing while my kids are upstairs napping and my husband is out fixing equipment…these are the precious moments that I have to myself and I use them up doing this…..and I love every second of it.

What prompted me to actually sit down and start writing was the fact that I said it out loud one day to my husband.

“I’ve always wanted to write a book.”

And his reply was so….him.

“Why don’t you?” (Him in the way that it was to the point and as always 100% supportive no matter how crazy it seems.)

“I don’t know what I’d write about.”

“How about “Farm wives – the new generation.”

Hmmmmmmm…….that struck a chord. I mean it’s not an award-winning title or concept (not yet anyways!!)…but the idea behind it really resonated. I am a farmer’s wife….I am the new generation of this type of wife…and I’m not like the “typical” farm wife stereotype. And no matter what “type” of farm wife, our common bond is that we are all there supporting our families as they put the world’s food on the table. It’s not an easy life by any stretch of the imagination nor is it the poetic, idyllic life that the movies/TV tends to portray. It’s a way of life that is both stressful and rewarding at the same time. Living on a farm gives us numerous opportunities to enjoy our growing family and the gorgeous world around us. Taking a deep breath after a summer rain and being able to taste the air….watching your kids faces as they witness a calf being born….eating carrots right out of the garden (they taste better with the dirt on!) or watching your husband, sweaty and dirt-stained from the day, take your daughter’s tiny hand as they walk across the yard together.

These little moments are why we love what we do and are why we, generation after generation, we continue to do it.

And that is what I want to share with the world…

Oh, and this…

Look of the week ~ Katherine Heigl

This week’s look is one that is more “inspired by” Katherine H. (LOVE her name by the way…). I thought that since fall is coming on, and in a heck of a hurry, I’d make this look a little warmer…

Harvest meals…

*harvest 2009*

As I stand here in my kitchen blogging (don’t ask…) I am snacking (gorging) on eatmore bars. These things are not only delicious…but super easy to make! My husband loves them in his lunch…and now that the swathers are rolling, making lunches is a daily occurence. And once the combines get going I pack anywhere from 1 to 4 lunches on any given day….and sometimes I get 15 minutes notice. Fun!

Anyways….these eatmore bars are heaven, easy and freeze well. A fantastic solution for the lunch dilemma. I got the recipe from my old trusty 4-H cookbook circa. 1997…do they make these anymore and where do I find one if they do?!

Eatmore Bars

2 cups Chocolate chips

1 cup Corn syrup

1 cup Rolled oats

2 cups Crushed peanuts (I have used almonds, walnuts..etc.)

1/2 cup Peanut butter

Melt choc. chips and corn syrup in a large pot on low heat. Take off heat, add rolled oats, peanuts and peanut butter. Spread on greased cookie sheet and let cool. Cut into squares and refrigerate. (I just put the pan right into the fridge and cut up later…and rip a few pieces off here and there as I walk by the fridge.)

Enjoy! And if you have any fantastic harvest tricks or recipes, please share!

Making plans…

My baby’s name is Hudson and when I think of his name, I think of cozy wood stoves, thick plaid jackets and a warm cabin by a lake. Mostly likely this is because of the popular Canadian association of the Hudson Bay Company. And this cozy, cabin theme keeps coming back to me as I plan his big boy room in my head….

I attempted to make what interior designers call a mood board to show my theme/what on earth I am talking about….this is much harder than it looks! But here is my best shot….

Hudson's Room - Mood Board

This is the headboard that I think I might attempt to make for my boy’s room. Granted, he’s only 10 months old and won’t be moving for probably another year or so…but it doesn’t hurt to think/plan ahead!

rusticglamheadboard

I want to paint the walls a green…NOT John Deere green, though, thank you very much! (My husband would LOVE that!) I was thinking something along this line…

And I have a dresser similar to this one (minus the numbers)…I picked it up for $1 at an auction. All it needs are handles/pulls. Any suggestions?

Of course, a Hudson’s Bay Company blanket….

What else would work? I was thinking of using some Native American postcards as art…how, I’m not too sure. Would it be too much to add snowshoes on a wall? I like the cabin theme, but don’t want it to be overkill.

Thanks!

Love…

P.S. Last day to enter my giveway!! I’ll announce the winner tomorrow morning…goodluck!
