And don’t forget to enter the FATHER’S DAY GIVEAWAY!!!
My fellow Alberta girl, Naomi, wrote me hoping for some inspiration and direction…she is looking for a rockabilly western look, or several looks for upcoming events. And while she knows that there are hundreds of places to shop online, she is hoping for some help finding some WHERE to shop. You know, as in physically go to the store and actually try stuff on…my FAVORITE way to shop!!!!!
Well, Naomi…good question! I am finding more and more these days that online specialty stores are the best places to find specific items or styles, but the downfall is, of course, you can’t try it on till you pay for it, and then the crappy part, have to send it back ($$) if it doesn’t work out…(like I just did with a GORGEOUS gold sequin skirt…LOVED it, but my house was COVERED in gold sequins after only 5 minutes of wearing it…nope, not a keeper!). I think your best bet will be to hit several thrift stores. I have found some GORGEOUS retro pieces in the past, and with a little drycleaning and alteration, you might find a truly gorgeous, one of a kind piece! I would start looking for pieces rather than a dress…that way you can mix and match with stuff you already have, and get several fab looks! (and if you DON’T look for a dress…your chances of finding one increase! Or does that just happen to me?!).
I put together a few looks to give you an idea…
Jessica tweeted me about wearing maxi dresses with boots…a yes?! or no?! And wondered how I would make it me?!
Great question!! I have to be honest, I have yet to find a maxi dress that I love…I have a rather large, er, pair o’ girls (!!) and maxi dresses don’t usually have straps that work well with bras that are actually supportive! But I am ALWAYS on the hunt and someday, I will find one!!! And when I do…this is how I will wear it!!
(as for with boots…that isn’t really my style…but check this chicka out…she knows how to work maxi dresses and boots!!!!)
This week’s reader request comes from Meg, she is as country as they come, but works downtown in the big city. She is hoping for some help to let her roots show through, but in a way that will work at work… (LOL)
Here are some ideas for you, Meg…basically, invest your $$ in some FABULOUS suits, pieces that you can mix and match, jackets, pants and skirts…then add the “YOU” to it with accessories. Pick accessories that looks expensive, if you want to invest, go for it, but remember to pick items that are classic and will look fab forever. For the cheaper pieces, go to stores that do fabulous copies of what is on trend today for less $$…here in Canada, The Bay does an AMAZING job…not too sure what to reccomend for the USA…any suggestions from you darlings?!
And keep the western/country reference subtle, just a touch here and there, makes for a classier look than the INYOURFACE western stuff…i.e.blingy belts, cowboy boots (not in the workplace), feathers, etc. And try to keep the “western” to just one item in your look, more than that is overkill.
This first polyvore page shows some examples of accessories I adore…
I am soooo loving House of Harlow 1960 right now!!! I totally admire Nicole Richie’s style (although she could stand to gain 20 pounds…just sayin’), she rocks that whole western-boho look…love it!
