In or out?!

06 Jan

The other day I was walking around one of my favorite malls in Calgary, Chinook Mall, and I was shocked.

Not so much by prices of things, or the fabulous sales. But rather by how turned off I was on what almost EVERYONE was wearing.

Now Chinook Mall is one of the classier (?!) malls…they have Tiffany & Co., Pottery Barn, Victoria Secret and Anthropologie, to name a few. And for Calgary, this is a big deal. Actually, for Canada, this is a big deal. I think there are only like 3 Pottery Barns in our country….

Anyways…

What I am getting at is that this mall caters to a “higher class” of stay at home moms and teens (the people who are usually at the mall at 10am)…so what they were wearing wasn’t shabby or horrible, actually, everyone looked REALLY put together. What bothered me was the VAST number of women wearing boots over jeans.

You know…

This look…

Now don’t get me wrong…I work this look, I LOVE this look…or should I say LOVED.

Because the more women I saw, the more I decided that I was SO OVER IT. Once something becomes soooo mainstream, I’m done…

– blingy belts, boots, coats, buckles…etc. OVER IT

– Miss Me jeans or any with the flashy embelished pockets…OVER IT

– round toed cowboy boots…

– burnout tees…

OVER IT.

Oh, and another look I saw A LOT of in the stores?! Aztec prints…

I adored this look this past September when all the great fall stuff was coming out…Now?! It has been dooonnneee by everyone and I am ready for the next thing. Of course I have worn all this stuff, but I like to find things and do it before everyone and their dog is too…I’m funny that way.

Soooo…that got me thinking. What do I think is next?!

Glad you asked!

Now, I am only one person…and I have a tendancy to voice my opinions…loudly.
But I do listen too…so, what do you think?!

I agree, I hate looking the same as everyone! I’ve recently been thinking it’s time to re-introduce my heels back into my wardrobe. Boots are way overdone! Well, all except my cowboy boots!

I agree with you that the “tall boots over skinny jeans look” is being overdone, but this doesn’t mean I will be getting rid of either of those items in my wardrobe any time soon! After spending most of last spring in that look, this winter I’ve found that I had more fun remixing the tall boots with a dress and tights (either a regular dress paired with a long sweater, or a straight up sweater dress). It is equally as comfy-cozy and easy to go out and about in as the former boots/jeans combo was. In the spring, as the weather warms up, I will eliminate the tights and wear my dresses with the tall boots and taller socks, or with the booties for a fun day look.

Likewise, I love my skinny jeans with short flat booties in the day or a pair of pointy-toed kitten heels for a casual evening out. Both of these are also comfortable and easy to move around in most circumstances.

So don’t toss those items I say, remix them to make them look fresh! Thanks for starting the convo FTW…keep on voicing your opinion I say 🙂

I agree 100%!! Mixing it up and making it yours is what it’s all about. And all your ideas sound fab…and don’t worry, my darling Frye boots aren’t going anywhere!

Thank you for writing this! The boots over jeans style I loved 3 months ago is over and done with in my opinion,it’s over done! And I can’t even stomach any bling any more, reading NFR fashion posts made my eyes bleed! I blame many of the western magazines for keeping the tacky trend alive. I would love to see well tailored elegance and truly inspired designs take the spotlight.

You are so right! I’m so over it also. It takes the same effort to put on something nice than something shabby. Thanks for the honesty 😉

Oh my, did you read my mind?! You are SO right…blingy belts, burn out tees (especially with crosses, pistols and skulls) and those jeans are so overdone! Why does everyone want to look the same? You always have the best ideas! Reading your blog makes my day….Thanks!!! And keep up the good work!!

Thanks!! I have so much fun writing this thing and meeting everyone. I think the problem is that we (Canada) are sooo much further behind in trends and style and the same goes for rural USA…by the time the stuff hits our stores, everyone else is on to something else!

This look almost makes me “in style.” Wranglers, boots, and old man snap shirts are my every day look. I’d like to try the blazer look, but I’m a bit nervous. Great picks, I love them both.

LOL…you are instyle…whatever is you is stylish, if you’ve been doing it forever, then it works for you! Blazers are AWESOME and soooo easy, just throw one on over your snap shirts or a tee. And done!!

I totally agree with you! I was wondering when the boots over jeans is coming to an end, however in winter with slush and snow, it can be a handy look! I think we’ll see more blazers and more platform heels coming this spring, but I’ve been struggling when I go to the mall because I feel everything is on repeat right now!

The sad thing is, I still LOVE this look. I just can’t do it when everyone else is too…

I understand what you are saying. I “follow” trends people like you set, but it does agitate me when co-workers begin to “copycat” what I wear or the way I wear it. I am conscientious NOT to follow the “everybody is wearing it” trend around here. I am a teacher in a small school and town in Arkansas, so it is noticed. National trends are slow to get here, so by the time it does, it is over for you and others who either set that look or started dressing that way when it was first introduced. I don’t know how to get around this because I can’t afford to buy and replace too often with fashion. I don’t stay on top of it the way you do, so I’m slow to get there while the look may already be on its way out! Oh, and by the way, what brand is the Bertie boot with the fringe?

The same thing goes here pretty much anywhere in Canada…we are soooo slow on western trends! I don’t buy everything I put on here…maybe 2% (!!) but one way to stay ahead of the curve is to buy things that are classic to you. Items that you know you will love a year or two from now, or save your pennies and splurge once in a while on something that will still be instyle 30 years from now! And I will look into the boot, I think if you click on it, it should take you to my polyvore site and then you can find the site from there…I will check!

Yes, it makes more sense to get the same look minus the designer name and prices. It sometimes takes a while to locate things to pull a certain look or outfit together. That’s why husbands of women in this part of the world sometimes accuse us of having a shopping addiction! I LOVE your suggestion made in a blog a while ago to buy denim jackets at thift stores. I will start taking a look at places like that myself!
